What you'll learn

Six modules.
Twelve hours.

Each module pairs video lessons with case studies, written material, and reflection prompts. Built with practitioners, not consultants.

2h

Foundations of platonic touch

The history, ethics, and physiology of non-romantic professional touch. What it is, what it isn't, who it serves, and the evidence base for why it works.

2h

Consent & communication

Continuous consent in practice. How to negotiate session terms pre-booking, check in throughout a session, and recognize the difference between verbal and embodied yes/no.

2h

Professional boundaries

Setting, publishing, and holding clear boundaries. How to decline a request without damage to the relationship. Recognizing and refusing boundary push.

2h

Trauma-informed care

The window of tolerance, common trauma responses during sessions, and the principles of trauma-informed practice — safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness, empowerment.

2h

De-escalation & safety

Identifying risk early. Verbal de-escalation techniques. When to pause a session, when to end one, and how to make either decision without harm to either party.

2h

Business of practice

Setting rates, managing schedule, communication with clients, taxes for 1099 contractors, self-care between sessions, and building a sustainable practice.

Who teaches it

Practitioners, not consultants.

Modules are built and taught by licensed somatic therapists, trauma-informed care educators, and Covenly providers with three or more years of full-time practice. Every lesson is reviewed by a clinical advisor before publication.

Assessments are conducted one-on-one by a senior certified provider who has personally completed at least 200 paid sessions. No automated grading.

Common questions

Do I need prior experience?

No. The certification is designed to bring committed people up to professional standard regardless of background. What we look for is empathy, professionalism, and a genuine desire to help — the rest is taught.

How long do I have to complete it?

Lifetime access once enrolled. Most providers finish within 4–6 weeks at a relaxed pace. There's no penalty for taking longer.

Is the $149 the only cost?

Yes for the certification itself. The background check (run through our vetting partner) is included in the same fee. There are no recurring subscription costs.

What if I fail the assessment?

Free re-takes. The exam is designed to test mastery, not to gatekeep. The mentor conversation surfaces gaps and gives you specific things to study before re-attempting.

Does the certification expire?

The badge stays active while you're listing on Covenly. We periodically release refresher modules (e.g., new policy updates, new research) and you complete them in-platform. No re-certification fee.

Is it accepted outside Covenly?

The certification is Covenly's own credential and is recognized within our platform. It's not interchangeable with massage-therapy licensing or social-work credentials, which are state-regulated. If your state requires touch-based service licensing, you remain responsible for obtaining it.
